Multi-device users can also maintain a more consistent workflow. Keep in mind that network permission models differ by system: Android and iOS use system VPN authorization, while desktop platforms involve a system proxy or TUN. A matching client name does not mean system settings can be copied step by step.

Those settings also mean a steeper learning curve. On first use, there is no need to change everything: import your subscription, keep the defaults, confirm that the basic connection works, then enable TUN or adjust DNS as needed. For Windows, macOS, and Linux desktops, it is an advanced yet still graphical option.

Cross-platform does not mean configurations can be copied unchanged. Desktop system proxies and Android’s VpnService are different traffic-capture paths, while background retention and battery policies apply only on mobile. With FlClash, treat subscription content as the shared layer and system permissions and runtime behavior as device-specific.

Clash Nyanpasu suits desktop users who already understand basics such as subscriptions, policy groups, rule modes, and TUN. If your only goal is to import a subscription and stay connected, the extra controls may offer little practical benefit. On older or resource-limited computers, reduce automatic update checks, frequent latency tests, and unnecessary background tasks. The download packages listed on this site follow the current catalog, so confirm the platform entry before choosing.

Clash for Windows

Clash for Windows established a widely used Windows workflow, and many older tutorials refer to its Profiles, Proxies, Rules, and General pages. If an existing computer still runs it, record the subscription source, current mode, custom overrides, and system proxy settings before planning the migration.

Do not use an archived client as the default starting point for a new installation. The original Clash and mihomo differ in feature scope and configuration extensions, so migration should focus on custom fields in the old configuration rather than copying the program directory. A safer approach is to export the required settings, re-import them into Clash Plus or Clash Verge Rev, and verify each item.

Clash Meta for Android

Clash Meta for Android is designed for users who need fine-grained control over how Android traffic is captured. In addition to subscriptions and policy groups, DNS, TUN, overrides, logs, and runtime parameters are easier to inspect directly. When an app appears connected but its traffic is not routed as expected, these controls help distinguish configuration-layer issues from system-layer behavior.

More parameters also create more opportunities for interactions. On first launch, grant system VPN access, use the default configuration to verify that a node works, then address Fake-IP, Private DNS, battery optimization, and background retention. Change one variable at a time to avoid losing the cause when DNS, rules, and power-saving policies change together.

Surfboard

ANDROID · INDEPENDENT IMPLEMENTATION

Surfboard is a standalone Android client option for users who prefer a centralized mobile workflow. It handles common subscription, policy, and rule scenarios, but its implementation is not part of the same core family as Clash, Meta, or mihomo. Interface terminology alone is therefore not enough to assume full configuration compatibility.

When migrating from another Clash client, re-import the subscription from its URL first instead of assuming every local override can be reused. If the configuration relies on specific mihomo extension fields, verify that parsing and policy groups remain complete. Basic use is usually more direct, while complex configurations require item-by-item checking.

ClashX Meta

ClashX Meta targets a macOS menu-bar workflow and is mainly suited to existing installations and historical configurations. System proxy switching, configuration selection, and menu-bar controls common in legacy setups can still guide migration, but its discontinued maintenance makes it unsuitable as the long-term default for a new macOS environment.

Before migrating, record the current subscription, rule mode, and custom configuration rather than copying only the application itself. Apple Silicon and Intel packages need to be handled separately, while configuration compatibility depends on the fields supported by the new client. If you need ongoing mihomo features, compare Clash Plus, Clash Verge Rev, and FlClash.

Original Clash, Meta, and mihomo: How to Tell Them Apart

The core determines configuration parsing, protocol support, and network-handling capabilities. The client provides the interface, permissions, updates, and system integration.

ORIGINAL CLASH

Original Clash

The legacy ecosystem associated with Clash for Windows. Many early configurations and tutorials were built around it, but after the original project stopped, later protocol extensions and feature development moved mainly to other core branches. When migrating legacy configurations, check base fields and extension fields separately.

META

Clash Meta

A branch name for extending protocol and networking capabilities within the original configuration ecosystem. Clash Meta for Android and ClashX Meta retain the naming from this period. When you see Meta, still assess the client’s maintenance status to decide whether it suits a new installation.

MIHOMO

mihomo

A common core choice in current desktop clients. Clash Verge Rev, FlClash, and Clash Nyanpasu provide graphical interfaces around it. A shared core can make configuration concepts more consistent, but each client’s overrides and system integration may still differ.

MIGRATION CHECK

Migration checklist for legacy clients

Migration is about the configuration source and how the system captures traffic—not about copying the entire program directory.

    Record subscriptions and local configuration

    Confirm the subscription URL, manually imported configuration files, current proxy mode, and custom rules. If the old client still works, record everything before installing the new client so the configuration source is not lost during migration.

  2. 02

    Re-import instead of copying the runtime directory

    Add the subscription again or import the Profile directly in the new client. Caches, logs, old core files, and application state are not essential configuration; copying the entire directory may also carry over obsolete paths and parameters.

  3. 03

    Verify the basic connection first

    Keep the default DNS and rule settings, select a working policy, and complete system authorization. After websites and commonly used apps work, restore custom overrides, TUN, or specific routing rules.

    Remove the old traffic-capture state

    Disconnect the old client before switching, then check the system proxy, VPN configuration, and startup items. When two clients try to capture traffic at the same time, port conflicts, leftover proxy states, or routing collisions are common.
